“KEYS” To Be A Safe Coach

  • Do a pre-season check of all portable goals. Look for loose fitting, sharp projections, missing pieces, and adequate anchors for each portable goal.
  • Secure all portable goals before games, and inspect all goals for hazards.
  • Ensure fields for games and practices are free of obstacles and irregularities.
  • Be observant of weather conditions like heat, lightning and air pollution.
  • Practice good first aid techniques for minor injuries.
  • Refer all significant injuries, including all concussions for medical evaluation,.
  • Know each player’s individual limitations and illnesses.
  • Apply good training techniques and injury prevention concepts in practices and games.
  • Supervise players when at games, practices and when traveling.
  • Keep parents informed on matters relating to the health and welfare of their players.
  • Inspect all player’s personal equipment regularly.
  • Promote good hygiene with players, keeping clothing and equipment clean, using good handwashing, cleaning and covering minor cuts and abrasions, and not sharing personal items like water bottles.
  • Do not permit players to return from injury until released by MD and ready to play.
  • Educate all players, parents, and staff on importance of safety. It’s everybody’s job.
  • Never put the importance of the game before the player’s health and well-being.
